Shark Week

Look up! The Shark Week Blimp will be in the Puget Sound area this week

You might see the blimp July 5-9 as part of a promotional tour related to the popular "Shark Week" series.

Be on the lookout: The Shark Week Blimp is touring the U.S. and is set to fly over Puget Sound-area cities between July 5-9 (2022).

There actually are two blimps touring — one on the East Coast, one on the West Coast — to promote the upcoming “Shark Week,” which starts July 24 on the Discovery Channel.

The West Coast-based blimp, 179 feet long and 56 feet high, will set out from San Francisco. It can travel at speeds around 50 mph and cover about 250 miles per day. At those rates, it should be easy to spot, enjoy and photograph the sight. Since this is a promotional journey, fans can share blimp sightings on social media with the hashtag #WestShark. Discovery has set it up as kind of a West Coast vs. East Coast challenge.

Organizers have given us the following schedule, which suggests there will be some stops and some backtracking:

Tuesday, July 5: Portland, Vancouver, Longview, Centralia, Olympia, Tacoma

Friday, July 8: Seattle and Puget Sound

Saturday, July 9: Tacoma, Centralia, Longview, Vancouver, Portland

Updated blimp location information is available online.
