Attention tinkerers, explorers and builders! Wait, that's every kid, really … and that's why the Adventure Playground on Mercer Island is such a great idea.
In a sectioned-off, forested, fairy-tale spot in Deane's Children's Park, kids are provided with toolboxes, various building supplies – wood, hammers, nails, rope – and the freedom to create their own play zones.
Adventure Playgrounds are a European invention, encouraging kids to build and shape the environment according to their own vision. They can construct, climb, explore, play hide-and-seek; whatever intrigues them as they are left to their own devices.
"There are plenty of trees, fallen trees and shrubs that make for a great environment to build forts and create worlds of their own," says Adventure Playground coordinator Ann Grabler.
The idea for Adventure Playground was born as Mercer Island Parks and Recreation staff searched for more ways kids could enjoy unstructured play. It is the fourth such playground in the country, and the first in Washington state.
Hearken back to your favorite memories as a child, exploring the woods or cruising the neighborhood on your bike, given the freedom to enjoy the carefree years of youth. Adventure Playground will give your kids a little of the same. Adventure Playground opens for the year June 30. Let the fun begin!
