President's Day picks for the homebound and outward bound

National holidays when kids are out of school like President's Day present two options, at least in our house. If everyone is feeling healthy after a long winter, we try to get out and do something educational that fits the day. Otherwise, we stay close to home—and if it's sunny like today—we get outside.

For the outward bound: Wait, which president chopped down that cherry tree again? Seattle Children's Museum is dipping into the past from 10 am to 5 pm today by sharing fun facts for kids about American presidents. Free with admission.

For the homebodies: Start spring cleaning as a family (step one around here: finally getting expired condiment bottles out of the fridge) and go for a nature walk to spot the tulips and daffodils that are finally popping up. Daylight savings doesn't bring extra light for another three weeks, but you can already tell, at least in Seattle, that the lion's share of winter is behind us.
