Erika's Weekend Picks: A huge street fair and tidepool fun

Erika Lee Bigelow lives in Seattle with her husband, three kids, one dog and nine fish. On Fridays you can find her on Q13 at 9:15 a.m. with a hand-picked list of family-friendly activities for the weekend. Here's what's on this Saturday and Sunday:

 

Beat the Bridge, Sun 8 a.m. Husky Stadium. Join the fun in an 8K run to cross the University Bridge before it raises. Or take part in a one-mile fun run, wheelchair race, Diaper Derby or 4-mile family walk. Events start and finish at the Stadium and proceeds benefit the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. Crash Filmmaking for Kids, Sat 9-5 SIFF Film Center at Seattle Center. Kids ages 9-12 collaborate with each other and a media educator to create a short film in eight hours. Movie screening for family and friends at the end. Pre-register. $50, $40 SIFF members, $5 for movie screening. siff.net

 

University Street Fair, Sat/Sun 10-7 FREE. The longest running street fair in the country is back and better than ever. Hundreds of craft, food and information booths are interspersed with street performers, entertainment stages and a large YMCA kids' area with bouncy houses, painting, games, bubbles and more. Ballard Street Scramble, Sun 9:30-12:30 Nordic Heritage Museum. This event coincides with the Syttende Mai Norwegian National Holiday Festival in Ballard this weekend, which means it is going to be extra fun. Grab your family and see how fast you can find 30 checkpoints marked on a map. You can walk, run or bike and along the way you'll get to see performances, traditional dress, a parade and a lot more Scandinavian spirit. Exploring Tidepool Life, Sun 10-11:30 Carkeek Park FREE. Come search for anemones, moon snail, clams, crabs and more with the help of a naturalist during low tide.  A great program for all ages. Wear water shoes. https://www.seattle.gov/parks/environment/files/Spring.pdf

 

U Village Ob-little-ride Kids Event, U Village, Sun 11-2 FREE. The Obliteride has been such a popular event, that they have expanded to include the kiddos. This Sunday join Fred Hutch and U Village for a kids' bike parade and noon, Zumba and yoga for kids, fun music by Brian Vogan, face painting and other awesome activities. uvillage.com
