This fall, 6th through 12th graders can dip their toes into environmental science and sustainable technology. The Mercer Slough Environmental Education Center, is a collaboration of Pacific Science Center and the City of Bellevue, is set to host sessions of two youth programs this fall: Environmental Science Pathways (for grades 6 – 8) and Environmental Science & Technology Practicum (for grades 9 – 12), programs that begin in October.
Pathways, aimed at middle schoolers, focuses on clean technology and its intersection with environmental science. Kids will study renewable energy and watershed ecology and carry out field experiments in the slough. Practicum session will allow high schoolers to carry out aquatic and terrestrial research in the slough, getting tons of time in the field and the lab.
Practicum sessions are held on Saturday mornings from 10 am to 1 pm, October 10 to December 12. Applications to join the practicum are available online. The session fee is $395; limited scholarships are available. Pathways sessions are held after school on Thursdays from 3:30 to 6 pm, October 1 to November 19. The session fee is $275. Financial assistance may be available for Bellevue students as well as limited transportation.
