New reading program helps kids stay active

Join the Read 4 Adventure program and foster a love for reading and physical activity

A local organization, High Trek Adventures, encourages youngsters to read books and stay active throughout the year. The Read 4 Adventure Program encourages children of all ages to drop screen time and indulge in tales of fiction or non-fiction that’ll transport them to faraway lands filled with mystery and adventure.

The benefits of reading

Jacqueline Kennedy said, “There are many little ways to enlarge your child’s world. Love of books is the best of all.”  When children learn to love books at a young age, they typically place a high value on reading, eventually becoming book readers for life.  While reading is a learned activity, it has incredible benefits, such as reducing stress levels, increasing life expectancy, and aiding with mental illness.  Having a love of reading helps with independence and self-confidence.

Love reading, stay active

In our fast-paced, screen-focused life, literacy and physical activity are beginning to take a backseat.  One of the questions to consider is, how can small businesses in the local community come alongside and support parents and schools as they spur children to develop a love for reading and to experience the joy and health benefits of being physically active?

The owners of High Trek Adventures, having students in neighboring school districts, are passionate about seeing children grow in their love for reading.  They understand the far-reaching benefits of literacy to the community as a whole. Out of this passion and their company goal of seeing children become more physically active, the Read 4 Adventure Program was born.

Read 4 Adventure Program: How it works

Starting in 2021, High Trek Adventures has partnered with elementary schools across Washington State to encourage literacy and physical activity in young people. The program is run annually and is administered by elementary schools.  Students who read 480 extracurricular minutes in March earn a reward voucher for an activity.  Vouchers can be used at one of three locations – High Trek Adventures in Everett, High Trek Adventures in Chelan, or, for when the PNW weather limits outdoor activity, at their indoor facility in Everett, Game On NW.  Activities may be for the ropes course and ziplines, a fun wall climb, laser tag, or even a discounted summer camp ticket. Recipients may also have a party hosted at High Trek or Game On NW.  In 2023, over 50 schools participated, and 2000 vouchers were awarded!

Reaching the goal: Healthy kids, healthy communities

With the combined efforts of parents, schools, and small business owners, we can move the needle on literacy.  Young people will begin to choose books over their devices.  Mental health will improve and stress levels will lower.  Minds will expand and vocabularies will grow.  Relationships will benefit and children will become well-rounded.

Whether a parent, librarian, Principal, PTA or a community member who loves books, all can do their part to encourage young people to pick up a book or to go play outside.

If your local elementary school would benefit from this program, please direct your PTA, librarian, or school Principal to www.read4adventure.com to learn more.
