McMenamins Anderson School in Bothell, isn’t just another date night that’ll never happen — it’s a fantastic spot to spend the day (or night) even with the kids in tow.
McMenamins is a small chain of boutique hotels and pubs in Oregon and Washington that restores derelict historical buildings — schools, hotels, even a poor farm — into places where the community can gather to eat, drink, relax, sleep and be entertained.
The Anderson School was built in 1931, and McMenamins took great care to preserve the character of the building while adding in their signature artistic details. Throughout the building, you’ll find paintings by local artists paying tribute to the history of the school and surrounding area. In fact, each guest room is named after someone, from former Anderson School staff to notable Bothell residents of the past.
Art and history are neat, but it’s the pool that’s bound to capture your kids’ attention. The Anderson School boasts a full-size indoor pool kept at a balmy 88 to 90 degrees. Both the pool and its neighboring pub have a charming South Seas theme. Two-hour open swim sessions are available throughout the day for $6 to $8 per person; admission is free for hotel guests and Bothell residents with ID. Hungry after all that swimming and art-walking? The Tavern on the Square
is located in the old cafeteria, which has undergone a gorgeous renovation. The Woodshop has retained its name but is now a pub and game room that welcomes kids. There’s also a movie theater on site which offers a full menu delivered to your seat.
Guest rooms have king or queen beds, and you can bring pets for an extra fee. Reservations are easy to make online, and dynamic rates start at about $145 per night.
