For many kids, summer can mean freedom, fun, and sun – but for those who rely on food services through school, the summer can entail a stressful gap in their access to nutritious food. Thankfully, some Seattle children under the age of 18 are eligible for free meals through the city’s Summer Food Service Program, a project of the Seattle Human Services Department.

The project kicked off on June 29, bringing meals to kids both through specific summer activity programs and those at sites open to the public. Qualifying families’ kids are welcome to eat at meal sites throughout the city, including designated community centers, Seattle park playgrounds, Boys and Girls Clubs, YMCAs and YWCAs, and other community sites throughout the city and other parts of King County.

The summer program runs until August 29. For a complete list of sites and hours for the Summer Food Service Program, call 206-386-1140 or visit seattle.gov/summerfood. To enroll, families who qualify via the standards set by the city are encouraged to apply on the Summer Food Service website.
