We might joke about the little monsters our kids turn into when low blood sugar strikes. But what about children who face truly empty cupboards and stomachs on a daily basis?
The nonprofit Feed Washington coordinates with local schools, food banks, residents and businesses to help hungry kids in our communities. The group, created 13 years ago, has provided nearly 700,000 meals since.
Feed Washington’s initial focus was regional, but has shifted to target specific populations.
In 2014, it zeroed in on Seattle’s Ballard neighborhood, identifying 72 kids in public schools who were going hungry. A fundraising effort produced $2,000 in ongoing monthly donations to feed them. The group then added 650 children going hungry in the Lake Washington School District, and is working to raise $10,000 in monthly contributions.
The nonprofit, which has more than 350 recurring donors, says even $5 or $10 a month can help.
