Birds, puppets, GeekGirlCon, and more!

 

St. Demetrios Greek Festival, Fri Oct 7 noon to 9 p.m., Sat Oct 8 10 a.m. – 9 p.m.,  Sun Oct 9 noon – 7 p.m. FREE. Opa! Three days of Greek folk dancing, Greek traditional music, Greek crafts, Greek food, a Greek marketplace and more at St. Demetrios Hall and Cultural Center. Admission is free, but bring money for incidentals. Shuttle service from Seattle Prep and Montlake Elementary. (Montlake)

 

Birds at the Burke, Sat Oct 8, 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. Burke Museum. See hundreds of birds, eggs and nests at the Burke Museum AND the most famous Seattle bird, Seahawks’ hawk, Taima. Learn about identifying and spotting birds and take part in fun bird games and hands-on activities. Event included with admission. $10, $8 seniors, $7.50 students with ID and ages 5-18, Free ages 4 and younger. (U District)

 

GeekGirlCon, Sat Oct 8 9 a.m. – 6 p.m. Sun Oct 9 9 a.m. – 6 p.m. Conference Center at WA State Convention Center.   It’s two days of celebrating girls in gaming, science, technology, comics and more. Explore robotics, science fiction, cosplay, and anime just to name a few. Meet and talk with women in a variety of amazing professions. All ages and genders are welcome. $30, $45 two-day pass, $10 6-12, Free for kids 5 and younger (Downtown Seattle)

 

Tales of Peter Rabbit by Thistle Theatre, Sat/Sun Oct 8/9 1 & 3 p.m. Magnuson Park Theatre. Told in Bunraku puppetry, a Japanese art form, “The Tale of Peter Rabbit” and “The Tale of Benjamin Bunny” are combined into a beautiful world of Beatrix Potter. Join a lovable hedgehog as she journeys to Mrs. Rabbit’s home just before Peter heads out on his fateful exploration on Mr. McGregor’s garden. All tickets $10; season tickets available.

 

Cedar River Salmon Journey, Sat/Sun Oct 8/9 11 a.m. – 4 p.m. FREE. Cedar River Park, Cavanaugh Pond, Renton Library, Landsburg Park Dam. The salmon are swimming and this Saturday and Sunday you can spot them in a variety of places with the help of volunteer naturalists. Head to Cedar River Park, Cavanaugh Pond, Renton Library or Landsburg Park Dam, learn fun facts about the fish, get your questions answered and see how many salmon you can count swimming upstream to spawn. 

 

ArtVenture: Shred, Stretch, and Sculpt! Sun Oct 9 1-3:30 p.m. Henry Art Gallery. FREE. ArtVentures are held the second Sunday of every month. This Sunday, learn what happens when artists transform everyday materials into new environments. Come crumple, cut, and push the limits of newspapers, magazines, and fabric scraps to build a giant landscape. Be inspired by the Vik Muniz: Twisted Realism and the Senga Nengudi: Improvisational Gestures exhibits and then build something amazing.
