Colorful lights, a polar bear swim, and Smell-O-Vision!

 

WildLights Fri/Sat/Sun 5:30-8:30 p.m. Woodland Park Zoo

It’s the final weekend for WildLights, the winter lights festival at Woodland Park Zoo. Come check out wild animals and places recreated in thousands of glittering, colorful LED lights. There are indoor and outdoor displays and even some real animals on view (including reindeer). $9.95, $7.95 ages 3 to 12, free ages 2 and younger. Free parking. Entry at West Gate only. 

 

New Year’s Eve Countdown Sat, Dec 31 10-5 Seattle Children’s Museum

Raise your glass (of apple juice) to toast the arrival of midnight in every time zone. Then take part in a different arts and crafts activity each hour that represents a tradition of one country in that time zone. Our lineup includes 11am – India (actually 10:30am), 12 p.m. Russia, 1 p.m. Ethiopia, 2 p.m. Greece, 3 p.m. France, 4 p.m. Morocco, 5 p.m. Brazil (actually 6 p.m.) Included with admission. $10.50, $9.50 grandparents, free younger than age 1.

 

Kids Rock Concert: The Harmonica Pocket Sat Dec 31 10:30 a.m. Mt. Baker Community Club

It’s time to get up and dance to some toe-tappin’, original music from local Kindie band The Harmonica Pocket. They have created imaginative, interactive music for kids that parents will love as well. Doors open 10 a.m., show starts 10:30 a.m. $5, $15 per family of four in advance, season tickets available.

 

Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory in Smell-O-Vision Sat Dec 31 3:30 p.m. SIFF Film Center

A chocolate river, the Everlasting Gobstopper, the Golden Ticket! Come watch this fantastic 1971 classic movie, made even more awesome with singing and a goodie bag of fragrant sweet treats. Rated G. Various dates and times through Jan. 2. $15, $14 seniors and youth, $10 SIFF members. No passes or vouchers.

 

Resolution Run and Polar Bear Dive Sun Jan 1. Magnuson Park

Start the year out right with a 5K run/walk, kids’ dash (ages 10 and younger, FREE, $10 for T-shirt), and an optional Polar Bear Dive into Lake Washington. (don’t forget a change of clothes). 9 a.m. registration, 10:30 a.m. run/walk, 11:30 a.m. kids' dash. Post-race hot refreshments, plus heated changing rooms. $40 to $45.

 

First Day Hikes Sun Jan 1 12 & 2 p.m. Camano Island State Park

Come enjoy guided walks thru forest, along a beach or around a lake, at noon or 2 pm. There are 4 different hikes offered from ½ mile to 2.8 miles, all with moderate terrain. The 2 p.m. walk is especially suitable for young hikers and kids in outdoor strollers. And today is a free day at Washington State Parks – no Discover Pass required.
