Monday, July 30

Robots and Chickens Join Seattle ReCreative in this weekly hands-on art workshop using recycled materials. Each week is a different theme, today, Robots and Chickens. 10 a.m. to noon today and Mondays through Aug. 27. Westlake Park, Downtown Seattle.

African Village Experience Become immersed in African culture with music, a marketplace featuring cloth and artwork, dance classes, and a community potluck. Daily 5 to 8 p.m. through Aug. 3. Pratt Park, Central District.

 

Tuesday, July 31

Open Play For All Explore the newly designed Seattle Children’s PlayGarden—a playground and garden that celebrates kids of all abilities. 3 to 7 p.m. Tuesdays through Thursdays, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Fridays and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturdays through Aug. 31.

Harry Potter 20th Anniversary Party Third Place Books is hosting a huge party with games, trivia, a photo booth, a house sorting ceremony, and more. 7 p.m. Third Place Books, Seward Park.

Kids Graphic Novel Book Group Learn about different kinds of graphic novels and how to make your own. Bring a favorite graphic novel to share, and art supplies to create. 10:30 a.m. University Book Store, University District.

LibraryLab Drop in to play with builder kits that promote S.T.E.M. learning. Recommended for ages 9 and older. 1 to 2:30 p.m. Broadview Branch Library, Broadview.

 

Thursday, August 2

Museum First Thursday Enjoy free admission to select museums (note: there may be admission for special exhibits) including Burke Museum (U District), Museum of History and Industry (South Lake Union), Living Computers 5 to 8 p.m. (Sodo), Northwest African American Museum (Central District) and Museum of Flight  5 to 9 p.m. (Tukwila). Seattle Art Museum (Downtown Seattle) hosts a drop-in studio led by a local artist, Wing Luke Museum (International District) has a children’s story time followed by an art activity at 11 a.m. and Nordic Heritage Museum (Ballard) hosts a pre-school story time at 10 a.m.

Scarecrow Video Children's Hour A multi-media educational series, ideal for pre-K. Each week, kids can enjoy a story, video clip, hands-on activity all related to the theme of transportation. 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. Scarecrow Video, Ravenna.

Cartoon Happy Hour Watch cartoons on the big screen and enjoy special food and drink offers ($). And there’s air-conditioning! 5 to 7 p.m. Central Cinema, Seattle (Central District).

Zucchini 500 Kids can make and race zucchini cars using car bodies and parts supplied by the farmers market and farmers (donations gratefully accepted). 4 to 6 p.m. Lake City Farmers Market, Lake City.

The Three Musketeers See live theatre performed by Greenstage throughout the summer at various outdoor locations. Today, enjoy The Three Musketeers. 7 p.m. Lower Woodland Park, Phinney Ridge.

A Cat in Paris Scarecrow Video has curated a mix of family friendly movies to enjoy outdoors on the big screen. Each night begins with kids art activities at 7:30 p.m. with the movie following at dusk. Magnuson Park Amphitheater, Sand Point.

 

Friday, August 3

Seafair Weekend Festival A Seattle tradition since 1950, this weekend you can see hydroplane races, a Blue Angels air show, wakeboarding, live music, kids activities and more. You can grab free tickets for today—click here for a list of pick up locations. Aug. 4-5 ticket prices are $10-$40, free for kids ages 5 and younger.

Make Stomp Rockets Every Friday in August, KidsQuest Children’s Museum will host a hands-on activity. Today, kids can create their own foot powered rockets. 10 a.m. Westlake Park, Downtown Seattle.

Umoja Fest Known as the “soul of Seafair”, celebrate African-American culture with games, hands-on activities, entertainment, food, music, dance, a parade and more. 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Aug. 3, noon to 8 p.m. Aug. 4, noon to 7 Aug. 5.

Paint A Kite Bring your imagination and paint a kite to be later included in Freeway Park’s annual kite installation (Sept. & Oct.).  Today and every Friday through August. 12:30 to 3:30 p.m. Freeway Park, Downtown Seattle.

Seussical KIDS There are a couple more chances to see this show featuring Dr. Seuss’ famous characters brought to life by Village Theatre’s KIDSTAGE team. Noon today and Aug. 10. Wetmore Avenue Plaza, Everett.

Reptile Man See Scott, aka the Reptile Man and about 8 to 12 of his scaly friends in this educational show. If you’d like, bring the sunscreen and towels to enjoy the adjacent spray park before or after the show.  1 p.m. Tukwila Community Center, Tukwila.

Magnolia Summerfest A community festival with a ton of kids activities including boat building, inflatables, hands-on crafts, Girl Scout led games, kids parade (10 a.m. Aug. 4) and special play areas for babies and toddlers.  Everyone can enjoy the food trucks, an outdoor movie (Coco 9:30 p.m. Aug. 3), grand parade (10:30 a.m. Aug. 4), entertainment, crafts, youth talent show (3 p.m. Aug. 5), pet parade (4:30 p.m. Aug. 5) and more. 2:30 to 11 p.m. Aug. 3, 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Aug. 4, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Aug. 5. YouTube Workshop If you have a teen who wants to be a YouTube star, they can learn from teaching artists at Reel Grrls about creating and managing a page. Kids are encouraged to bring a laptop if they have one. 2:30 to 5 p.m. Southwest Branch Library, West Seattle.

Basketball, Street Art and Pizza Middle and high school aged kids can enjoy a game of pick-up basketball. Younger kids can practice their skills on the courts behind Neighborhood House High Point. Saturday, August 4

Summer at SAM Seattle Art Museum hosts a weekly summer series featuring free yoga classes (9 to 11:30 a.m.), an open studio session to create art (11 a.m. to 3 p.m.), park tour (1 p.m), and free Zumba class (2 p.m.).  Today and Saturdays through Aug. 18. Olympic Sculpture Park, Belltown.

Free Drop-In Skateboarding Lessons Drop in skateboarding lessons for kids ages 12 and younger. Spots are filled on a first-come-first-served basis. Held on select Saturdays at various locations throughout the summer. 10 a.m. to noon. Ballard Commons Park, Ballard, and Virgil Flaim Park, Lake City.

Volunteer Park Conservatory Explore the lush greenery inside the conservatory for free on the first Thursday and Saturday of every month. 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Lake City Seafair Festival & Parade Giant (12 acres!) annual festival with live music, hands-on crafts with local artists, touch-a-truck, artisan vendors, vintage car show, kids activities, food trucks, salmon bake, skate park/hip-hop mash up (Virgil Flaim Skatepark), kids parade (6 pm), dog parade (6:30 pm) and grand parade (7 p.m.). 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Lake City Way and surrounding areas, Lake City.

Kite Festival Enjoy beautiful kite demonstrations, vendors, kite-making (limited to first 250 kids), inflatables, face painting, and food trucks. Bring your own kite and blanket to join the fun. 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Chambers Creek Regional Park, University Place.

NW Tap Connection See tap dancing with hip-hop flavor. Part of the Summer Music Festival, which happens during the nearby University Farmer’s Market. Noon to 1 p.m. University Heights Park Plaza, University District.

Alki Point Lighthouse Tours Take a look inside a fully functioning lighthouse on an active U.S. Coastguard site.  No wheelchair access. Children ages 7 and younger are permitted to visit the landing, but must be 8 and older to visit the top. 1 to 4 p.m., weekends through Sep. 3. Last tour begins at 3:45 p.m.

Global Playground This series celebrates multiple cultures with playground games, hands-on activities, live music and entertainment, and interactive dance workshops. 4 to 7 p.m. today and Saturdays through Aug. 18.

When You Wish Upon A Pizza See a “cheesy twist” on fairy tale favorites. 5 p.m. today at Highland Park, West Seattle.

Puppet Workshop Join a teaching artist from Silver Kite Community Arts to create puppets from recycled materials. Best for ages 7 and older. 1 to 2 p.m. Wallingford Branch Library, Wallingford.

 

Sunday, August 5

Sunday Public Sail Each Sunday, the Center for Wooden Boats offers free 45-minute rides on Lake Union. Set sail on one of the classic boats. Sign up for a slot in person, several trips throughout the day. Space is limited. Sign up begins at 10 a.m. Center for Wooden Boats, Lake Union. 

Bicycle Sundays The four-mile stretch of Lake Washington Boulevard between Mount Baker Beach and Seward Park is closed to motorized traffic several Sundays through September. Enjoy biking, jogging or strolling along the water. 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Lake Washington Boulevard South, Mount Baker.

Greenwood Concert Band Pack a lunch and enjoy this outdoor concert series. 2 p.m. today and most weekends through Sep. 16. Hiram M. Chittenden Locks, Ballard.
