The Community Center for Education Results is hosting an open-to-the-public meeting on Thursday, April 7, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Puget Sound Educational Services (800 Oakesdale Ave. S.W. in Renton). Attendees will learn about the innovative education initiatives happening in South King County this school year.
Meeting topics include an in-depth briefing on the Road Map Project, a set of initiatives intended to double the number of students in South King County and South Seattle who are on track to graduate from college or earn a career credential by 2020. Updates will also be given on several key 2011 priorities, such as getting 100 percent of eligible eighth graders signed up for College Bound Scholarships. A networking lunch will be served at noon.
Federal Way Superintendent Rob Neu will deliver the keynote speech at the event. He will discuss the district’s core academic strategies, including the Acceleration Initiative, which has received acclaim for its success this year. As a result of the initiative, all Federal Way students in grades six through 12 who pass the state standardized test are automatically signed up for advanced learning classes. The number of juniors and seniors taking advanced-track classes has gone up 71 percent in one semester.
Past Washington State Board of Education Chair Mary Jean Ryan founded the Community Center for Education Results to improve education for students in the corridor between Renton and Tacoma. The organization is sponsored by The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, The League of Education Voters and several other organizations that share the goal of improving educational attainment.
