At Sammamish Montessori School (SMS), we believe that learning extends beyond the classroom. Our enrichment programs and field trips are designed not only to enhance our children’s educational experience but also to foster a sense of community among students, parents, and staff. This year, our enrichment programs and field trips have provided invaluable opportunities for children and parents to connect, learn, and grow together as a community.
A Warm Welcome: The “Red Barn” Farm Trip
We kicked off the school year with our much-anticipated Red Barn Farm Trip, a cherished tradition at SMS. This trip serves as a welcome gathering for new and returning parents and students, setting the tone for the year ahead. The farm visit provides an immersive experience where children can interact with animals, learn about sustainable farming practices, and appreciate the natural world. Parents and children together enjoyed the fresh air, participated in hands-on activities, and engaged in meaningful conversations.

The farm trip is more than just an educational outing; it’s a celebration of our shared commitment to creating a nurturing environment where everyone feels connected. The experience of feeding animals, planting seeds, and exploring the farm fosters a sense of wonder and respect for nature in our young learners. Parents, meanwhile, have the opportunity to bond with each other and with teachers, strengthening the ties that make our SMS community so unique.
Building Community at School Through Field Trips
In the spring, we embarked on another exciting field trip to the Burke Museum, which was a once-in-a-lifetime immersive experience for our children. For an entire day, the entire museum was open exclusively to SMS families, creating a unique and intimate atmosphere for exploration and discovery. This trip was designed to expand our students’ horizons and deepen their understanding of history, culture, and science.
The Burke Museum, with its extensive exhibits on natural history and cultural heritage, provided an engaging and educational experience for both children and parents. During the trip, children marveled at the dinosaur skeletons, explored the rich biodiversity of the Pacific Northwest, and learned about the region’s indigenous cultures. Parents and children participated in guided tours, interactive displays, and hands-on activities, all of which brought the exhibits to life.

This special day at the Burke Museum was not only about learning but also about strengthening the bonds within our community. Many of our students are alumni of SMS, and these family trips offer a wonderful opportunity for them to reconnect with their former teachers and cherish the bonds they built over many years. Seeing familiar faces and sharing stories of their time at SMS fosters a sense of continuity and belonging that is invaluable to our community.
This shared experience at the Burke Museum enriched our students’ knowledge and created lasting memories, deepening the sense of belonging within our SMS community. Parents, teachers, and alumni coming together in such a meaningful way exemplifies our commitment to being one cohesive community.
Community at School: Amazing Adventures Program
Our daily Amazing Adventures program is a cornerstone of our enrichment offerings at SMS. This program provides a diverse range of activities designed to cater to the varied interests and talents of our students. From Art classes and Drama/Theater to Sports, and Dance, there is something for everyone.
Art Classes: Our art classes allow children to explore their creativity and express themselves through various mediums, including painting, sculpture, and mixed media. Under the guidance of experienced instructors, students learn about different artistic techniques and art history, fostering an appreciation for the visual arts.
Drama/Theater: The drama and theater program encourage children to explore their imagination and develop their storytelling skills. Through role-playing, scriptwriting, and performance, students gain confidence, improve their communication skills, and learn the value of teamwork.
Sports and Dance: Physical activity is an essential part of our Amazing Adventures program. Our sports and dance classes promote physical fitness, coordination, and teamwork. Whether it’s soccer, basketball, ballet, or contemporary dance, children have the opportunity to stay active and healthy while having fun.
Expanding Horizons: New Offerings
Starting next year, we are excited to expand our enrichment programs to include music, choir, Spanish, and Mandarin classes.
Music and Choir: Our music program will introduce children to the joy of making music, whether through playing instruments or singing in a choir. These classes will help students develop their musical talents, improve their auditory skills, and appreciate the beauty of music.
Language Classes: The addition of Spanish and Mandarin classes will expose our students to new languages and cultures, enhancing their cognitive abilities and global awareness.
Learning a new language at a young age can improve memory, problem-solving skills, and cultural sensitivity, preparing our students to be global citizens.
A United Community at School
At the heart of all these activities is the concept of “We are one community.” Our enrichment programs and field trips are not just about learning new skills or gaining knowledge; they are about building connections, fostering inclusivity, and creating a supportive environment where every member feels valued.
Our field trips and daily programs provide parents with the opportunity to be actively involved in their children’s education. By participating in these activities, parents can see firsthand the positive impact of our Montessori approach and contribute to the vibrant community spirit that defines SMS.
Our commitment to building a strong community is reflected in the smiles of our students, the dedication of our staff, and the enthusiasm of our parents. Together, we create an environment where every child can thrive, every parent can feel connected, and every teacher can make a difference.
In conclusion, the enrichment programs and field trips at Sammamish Montessori School are integral to our mission of fostering a well-rounded education and a strong sense of community. As we look forward to another exciting year of learning and growth, we remain dedicated to our vision of “We are one community,” where everyone is welcomed, supported, and inspired to achieve their fullest potential.
