Congrats to the State Elementary Chess Champions

More than 1,000 Washington grade schoolers converged on the Seattle Waterfront's Pier 91 last month to compete in the 2014 Washington State Elementary Chess Championship. The annual event is sponsored by Northwest Chess and the Chess Mates Foundation, organizations dedicated promoting a love the game and use of chess as a school teaching tool.

First place winners included:

  • Kindergarten: Ali Carter, Leschi Elementary in Seattle (Kindergarten)

  • Grade 1: Andy Tien of Somerset Elementary in Bellevue and Brandon Jiang of Bellevue Children's

  • Grade 2: Tarik Kameric, Juanita Elementary in Kirkland; Jeffrey Tso, Fisher's Landing Elementary in Vancouver; and Ethan Progrebinsky, Ben Rush Elementary in Redmond

  • Grade: Alex Beck, Annie Wright School in Tacoma; Jason Zhang, Cascade Ridge Elementary in Sammamish; Daniel Shubin, Rockwell Elementary in Redmond; and Andy Huang, Cougar Ridge Elementary in Bellevue

  • Grade 4: Neil Chowdhury, Spirit Ridge Elementary in Bellevue; Everett Wang, Redmond Elementary in Redmond; and Teddy Roberts, Cherry Crest Elementary in Bellevue

  • Grade 5: Ishaan Puri, Bear Creek in Woodinville; Richard Yang, Spiritridge in Bellevue; Brian Chen, Spiritridge in Bellevue; and Aaron Probst, Our Lady Fatima in Seattle

  • Grade 6: Arjun Thomas, Meridian Park Elementary in Shoreline; Brock Grassy, Hamilton Middle School in Seattle; Maxwell Truluck, Pacific Crest Montessori in Seattle; Jed Cohen, Hamilton Middle School in Seattle; and Surya Gorantla, Louisa Alcott Elementary in Redmond.
