February is Parent Recognition Month. Strengthening Families Washington, of the Department of Early Learning for Washington State, believes there is no better way to recognize a parent, grandparent, foster or adoptive parent than by acknowledging the numerous and impressive things they do to strengthen their family and those around them in their community.
Seattle's Child is proud to sponsor the Washington Unsung Hero Awards, recognizing our everyday heroes and honoring the important role caregivers play in children's lives. There are 28 nominees for the 28 days of February, and Seattle's Child will highlight each and every one.
Congratulations to the Unsung Hero for February 17: Bill Lash – Lacey, WA:
Bill Lash has been a mentor/coach for volleyball for many years. He runs a club where girls find a place to develop skills to play the game. What makes him special from other club directors is that he does not deny any girl that wants to play volleyball. He finds them a team according with their level of skills. His club is the only club in Olympia that offers scholarships for the girls that can't afford the tuition to play. He spends several hours everyday at the volleyball facility teaching the girls how to play. Last year he helped my daughter and my niece gaining volleyball skills. He meet them right after work and spent two hours teaching them volleyball. He didn't expect any pay for that and he will do it for any girl that wants to improve her volleyball skills. He is always available for the girls that want to talk to him about anything, he will give a ride to the girls if parents can't pick them up from practice. He also helps the girls with whatever they ask of him and he will buy fundraising items even if he already has it. He is a terrific mentor and coach and spends countless hours with players teaching volleyball irregardless of economic status, skills, and abilities. I can't say enough about what he has done in the volleyball community and volleyball players throught the area.
