Traffic can be a bear between Seattle and Bellingham on the weekend, especially in a sticky spot on I-5 near downtown Everett. But if you leave the city just after rush hour during the week it's possible to fit in a fun, quick day trip with kids. Here's how to eat brunch in Fairhaven, explore Chuckanut Drive, pass through Bow-Edison and be back in Seattle before the evening commute hits.

Carbs and coffee: Drive north 90 minutes to Fairhaven, on the sweet, historic south end of Bellingham. Harris Avenue Cafe serves kids complimentary fruit plates arranged in smiley faces, bear shaped pancakes and (refillable) coffee by the mug from neighboring roaster Tony's, so everyone is fueled up for what's next. Walk off food comas at nearby toy, kids clothing and book stores, all on the same block.
A killer view: Washingon State's iconic, almost 30-mile Chuckanut Drive begins in Fairhaven. Head south a few miles until you reach Larrabee State Park. There's a playground and trail to a small beach with amazing views of Samish Bay. Then take your time driving the curvy road with plenty of places to pull over and take in dramatic views of Puget Sound. Tip: A Discovery Pass is required to park in the state park.

Because, sugar: Chuckanut spits out near Bow-Edison, two small towns dotted with local producers that help define farm-to-table eating in the Northwest. Start at Breadfarm, the bakeshop serving organic Bow Hill baguettes and fig anise panini made on-site. Kids will make a bee-line to the basket of sugar cookies; one is big enough to split two ways. Tip: Most of area's restaurants and cash-only, and both of the ATMs near Breadfarm are inside bars that don't allow kids, so come prepared.
