Shadow Show
We’ve been stocking up on paper products. Why not use their skeletons for fun projects? Simply cover one end of an empty toilet paper roll with plastic wrap, securing it with a rubber band, and then place a cut out (sticker, foam shape, etc…) on top of the plastic. Once it gets dark, shine a flashlight through the other end of the tube and point your ‘projector’ towards a blank wall for your very own shadow show. You can even put on some music and make your figures dance. More details here.
Urban Camping
You might not be able to head to the campground right now, but why not bring the campground to you? Pop a tent up in your outdoor space and take advantage of this beautiful weather. Encourage the kids to plan a ‘camping meal’ and try to prepare as much of it as you can with one pan over a camp stove or, if you have one, a fire pit. Then snuggle into sleeping bags, sing camp songs, and don’t forget the s’mores! If you have time to set up your camp on Friday, April 17, you can join The Great Washington Camp-In, Washington State Park’s Foundation’s virtual event, which features stories, songs and camp recipes.
Feed the Birds
Our feathered friends will love this other great idea for those empty paper towel or toilet paper rolls*. Spread the cardboard roll with peanut butter or a little honey, roll the rolls in bird seed, and string a piece of string through each tube. Hang your new bird feeders on bushes or trees in your yard then watch through your windows as the birds and squirrels enjoy your treats! (*Pinecones also make great bird and squirrel feeders.)
Workout Competition
Challenge your small fry to a cross fit competition using a deck of cards. Separate into two piles; face cards and number cards, then assign face cards a certain exercise (i.e. Jack = jumping jacks). Take turns flipping over a card from each pile, then see who can complete the correct number of each activity the quickest.
Snack Time
Want the kids to eat something healthy that they can prepare without your help? How about a nut butter, chocolate chip, and banana sandwich? Simply choose a whole grain or gluten-free bread, and a peanut or almond or sunflower butter that works for your family. Mix the nut butter with a drizzle of honey, a handful of semisweet chocolate chips, and a sprinkle of cinnamon. Spread this amazing mixture on bread, then slice a banana and layer it on top. Delish!
