It’s nearly time for “out with the old, in with the new.” Unless we’re talking Mochi Tsuki, the Japanese new year’s tradition of steaming sweet rice over an open fire, pounding it with wooden mallets in a warm stone bowl to create a smooth dough, then patting it into delicious, chewy cakes known as mochi. This free event takes place Sunday, Jan. 4, on the campus of IslandWood on Bainbridge Island, where families gather each year to enjoy taiko drumming, see old friends, and, of course, gather ’round the fire to take a turn swinging mallets to make mochi.
