Honoring a dedicated grandfather | Unsung Heroes

Don Brownlee provides a caring, loving and supportive home for his grandson.

Seattleā€™s Child is proud to partner with the state Department of Children, Youth and Families Strengthening Families Washington to honor outstanding caregivers doing important work on behalf of children. Throughout February, weā€™ll introduce you to Unsung Heroes from around the state: biological parents, grandparents, foster and adoptive parents. Some volunteer at local schools; some have started nonprofits; some mentor others in their communities. Enjoy the stories of 2025ā€™s unsung heroes.Ā

Don Brownlee, Ellensburg

I have had the opportunity to watch Don provide a caring, loving and supportive home for his grandson.

He stepped up and has provided stability for his grandson. Iā€™m impressed by his ability to work full time and still have a smile and excitement everyday when picking his grandson up from our program. Heā€™s amazing at communicating with us and always shows his appreciation and recognition for our efforts in helping his grandson.

It warms our hearts to see the love they have for each other, and you can tell that Grandpa is this childā€™s person.

When I read the five protective factors of Parental Resilience:Ā Concrete Supports in Times of Need, Social and Emotional Competence of Children, Social Connections and Knowledge of Parenting and Child Development, I can confidently say that Don is a great example of each one!!

Don deserves recognition for being a dedicated and supportive grandfather.
