The advocacy group the League of Education Voters want kids to have fun and learn about the process of governments, which is why they have launched the Great How-A-Bill-Becomes-A-Law LEGO Reenactment Contest.
So grab your LEGOS, your kids and your video camera and use them to tell the story of how a bill becomes a law in Washington State. Submissions from LEGO clubs, families and individuals are all welcome. Here are the contest details:
The object : to see who can create the best short video/Prezi/PowerPoint/Flash or other media presentation that shows in simple terms how a bill becomes a law in the state of Washington by using Legos reenactments. Contest organizers encourage contestants to take a real-life example ā like the Walla Walla sweet onion becoming the state vegetable ā to demonstrate the legislative process.
Winner gets: $500, a write-up in the LEV Blog and a sense of accomplishment that you’ve done something to educate the people of Washington state.
Who can enter: LEGO clubs, film clubs, robotics clubs, bingo clubs, crafty individuals both young and old. The prize money can either go to a club, school foundation or an individual.
Requirements:
- You must Legos in the recreation.
- Feel free to use Flash, video, PowerPoint, Prezi, whatever-clever-means-you-can to tell the story but it must be digital so that we can put share it online.
- The overarching goal of this project is to show people how a bill becomes a law in Washington state.
- Make it fun and creative but get your facts right. We hope that teachers will use this in classes to show how our legislative process works.
- Keep it to a reasonable length. This isn’t the Lord of the Rings trilogy. Edit, edit, edit. General guideline: 3 minutes.
- You must either be a Washington state resident or be living in the state.
- Final product becomes property of the League of Education Voters (that’s us) to distribute how we see fit (although we’re happy to share the credit).
- If your submission can’t be easily emailed (i.e. – file is too large), please contact us at info@educationvoters.org, and contest officials will help you figure it out how to get it to them.
