A few weeks ago we reposted a piece by KUOW’s Ann Dornfield about Lowell Elementary on Capitol Hill – District Didn't Want Us to Visit This Struggling School. The school serves a large homeless student
population. Our readers responded by asking how they might help the school.
We came up with the following:

Volunteer
If you want to volunteer at the school, email lowellvolunteering@gmail.com for
opportunities.
Special or unusual skills we’re looking for: any experience working with children, fund-
raising, event planning, communication/social media, volunteer coordination, and
translation (there are many languages spoken at Lowell, including Chinese, Spanish,
Amharic, Tigrinya, Somali, Tagalog, and Vietnamese).
Current volunteer needs:
• Lunch/recess monitors, between 11 am and 1 pm
• Office help, between 11 am and 2 pm
• Bus monitors
• Classroom help/monitors (primarily during the school day, 8:55–3:25, but there might
also be some opportunities for helping teachers outside those hours)
• Reading tutors/helpers for two reading programs: Team Read and Global Reading
Challenge
• General PTA help — there are always odd jobs, helping clean classrooms, getting fliers
made and distributed, helping with events, etc.

Partner
If you have a business, we are often looking for in-kind donations and
gifts/partnerships for fund-raising. (And we always try to spread the word about
businesses helping us!)
Advocate
Demand that our state elected officials fully fund education. Push the
district for rules that encourage a more equitable sharing of resources.
And anyone can join the Lowell PTA to keep up with our kids’ needs! Go
to lowellelementary.org, you don’t have to have a child attending the school.

CPAs in our extended Lowell family or community who would consider a pro bono
project for the Lowell PTA, even just one time? Specifically, we’re looking someone
who can file our 990-EZ. It should be a fairly simple return — and it would free up
almost a thousand dollars for other important needs at Lowell (like student scholarships
to Islandwood, supplies for teachers, food for the Lowell Food Pantry, etc.). Please
