How to talk to kids about death: Panel discussion Nov. 9 at Town Hall Seattle

A mom living with cancer will be joined by a handful of experts on kids and grief for this important, special event.

How do you talk to kids about death? It's a question none of us really wants to face, but we all should.

A local author and mom will lead an expert panel on that topic on Nov. 9 at a Town Hall Seattle event.

Caroline Wright has two young boys and was diagnosed with an aggressive, terminal brain cancer.

She has lived past her initial prognosis and written the book "Lasting Love," which began as a gift to her sons but that she then published as a tool for other families.

She and the others on the Town Hall panel will offer strategies for talking about tragedy with children and tools for helping kids navigate grief.

Joining Wright for the discussion will be:

Jim Cubbage, co-founder and trip leader for Wild Grief, a nonprofit that combines nature and peer grief support.

Dr. Lamont Green, lead youth and young-adult homelessness planner for King County and longtime social-change advocate.

Heidi Howard, mental-health counselor to adolescents and families. She has worked with many clients affected by grief in schools, hospitals, residential treatment programs and private practice.

Juliana Perez, a social worker and spiritual-health clinician for Seattle Cancer Care Alliance; previously executive director of Safe Crossings Foundation, dedicated to helping children cope with grief.

Amy Thompson, a counselor with Providence Hospice and program coordinator for Safe Crossings, a program that provides free support for children, teens, and families in King County who are anticipating or have experienced the death of a significant person in their lives.
