Magnolia's Elizabeth Swanberg, the 14-year-old eighth-grader who pledged to go bald for pediatric cancer, had her head shaved last week at Catherine Blaine K-8 School. Surrounded by friends and family, Swanberg cut off 22 inches of her hair. She plans to donate her hair to Wigs for Kids, which benefits children who have lost hair during cancer treatments.
Swanberg has already raised over $4,000 for the St. Baldrick's Foundation, which provides grants for researchers working to find a cure for childhood cancer. She hasn't had any connection to cancer, or been heavily impacted by it, but that is her impetus for participating. Performing the honors for Swanberg's shave was Louisa, a young cancer survivor whose doctor has received funding for pediatric cancer research from St. Baldrick's.
