STEM-based ‘Proton Preschool’ to open at Pacific Science Center

The new Proton Preschool, at Pacific Science Center's main campus, will leverage science to facilitate learning experiences through hands-on, play-based activities and investigations.

Research shows the early years of a child's life are the most critical window in which to develop a child's full potential and maximize key academic, social and cognitive skills. The new Proton Preschool, at Pacific Science Center's main campus, will leverage science to facilitate learning experiences through hands-on, play-based activities and investigations.

Enrollment for children ages 3 to 5 for Proton Preschool opens today, with the first session of the program being held on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9 a.m. until noon, January through June. Weekly themes and daily activities are designed to meet the specific developmental needs of early learners through basic science concepts while utilizing the resources Pacific Science Center has to offer.

"In Proton Preschool, we develop children's cognitive, social and emotional skills by providing them with engaging experiences designed to stimulate rich conversations with their surroundings and with each other," said Ann McMahon, vice president of science and education for Pacific Science Center. "Our emphasis on cognitive and social experiences in all our early learning programs enhances each child's lifelong learning skills while fostering respect for the world around them."

Pacific Science Center has seen success with its Polliwog Preschool at the Mercer Slough Environmental Education Center. In its third year, Polliwog Preschool has consistently filled each session with a sizable wait list for each. Pacific Science Center staff is excited about expanding preschool programming to the flagship location in Seattle.
