Spend 10 weeks learning the art of playwriting from Anita Montgomery, ACT Theatre's literary manager and education director, in the ACT Afterschool Young Playwright's Program. Participants will learn how to get their creative juices flowing and how to transform their own stories, experiences and opinions into words on a page.
The program is open to youth ages 12 to 18 and requires just a $50 administrative fee in order to keep the class accessible to any middle or high school student who wants to learn playwriting. The class meets at ACT from Sept. 15 through Nov. 24, on Mondays and Wednesdays from 4:30 to 6 p.m. There is a special showcase of student work at the end of the session.
The plays the kids create also have a chance to be produced in ACT's Young Playwrights Festival in March 2015, when eight chosen playwrights get to have their work performed as a staged reading with a Seattle director and professional local actors reading the roles.
The deadline for application into the Afterschool Young Playwright's Program is Friday, Sept. 12. Apply through ACT's online registration link. There is a maximum of 15 students allowed in the class, so it's first-come first-served.
The Young Playwright's Program has been a program at ACT for more than a decade. Each fall, teaching artists, who are also working playwrights, get sent into area schools for a 10-week program that takes students from learning about plays to writing one of their own. The on-site afterschool class is available for students who don't have the program offered at their school, but are still interested in the curriculum.
