You could nickname the students at Orca K-8 in Seattle the little engines that could. In a service learning project on hunger in the United States, they reached a goal of collecting 5,000 cans, packages and bottles of food for the Rainier Valley Food Bank. In addition to the food, they also collected nearly $1,000 in donations and will contribute fresh produce grown in their school garden.
On Thursday, June 21, there will be a small march around the school beginning at 11 a.m., when students will stride around the building to deliver the canned food items. The Rainier Valley Food Bank will put out bins to collect cans from the students and staff in the front of the school building, next to the produce garden.
The event will mark the completion of the school’s yearlong quest to help provide for the community.
