Unsung hero: Swati Mohta, a tireless and loving advocate for her daughter's care

Seattle's Child is proud to once again sponsor the Unsung Heroes being honored in February by the Department of Children, Youth and Families Strengthening Families Washington.

Every day this month we'll present an Unsung Hero.

Nominations are accepted from around the state and include biological parents, grandparents, foster and adoptive parents. Some volunteer at local schools; some have started nonprofit organizations; some mentor others in their communities. All honorees are true heroes: outstanding caregivers doing important work on behalf of children.

Swati Mohta, Seattle

Swati is one of the most attentive, caring, and resilient people I have ever met.

Her daughter has a complex medical diagnosis that results in having multiple providers and appointments every week. Not only has Swati remained calm throughout all the chaos that life has thrown at her, she has built an amazing connection with her daughter.

Swati took the initiative to transfer her daughter's care to Seattle Children's hospital when it was necessary and then again to Philadelphia Children's when her daughter needed even more specific, specialized care. She has literally flown across the country multiple times when she knew her daughter needed more help.

Before they were assigned home-health nurses, Swati moved her bed to the living room and was up all hours of the night when her daughter needed help. When they were still not assigned nurses, Swati reached out to the agency and advocated for her daughter and their family. This is just one example of her asking important questions and seeking help when necessary.

Though she may have a busy schedule, at each therapy session she has specific thoughts and questions that she knows would be pertinent to my care and advice. She says many clinicians have asked her if she is a medical provider because she is so thoughtful and articulate with her questions. On top of all this, she keeps up her personal hobby of making delicious meals and selling them to families in her community. Swati is amazing, to say the least.
