UW Department of Biology opens its doors to kid scientists

Visit the greenhouse with the infamous corpse plant

Got curious kids, budding biologists, or just looking for a cool way to spend a Saturday? The UW’s Department of Biology is hosting its annual Biology Open House on Saturday, May 17, 2025, from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at the Life Sciences Building and Greenhouse on the Seattle campus. It’s totally free, and packed with activities, exhibits, and science-y fun for all ages.

Interesting questions that need answers

Families can delve into fascinating topics like how penguins have adapted to survive climate change, the decision-making process of neuron development, the reasons behind mosquitoes’ attraction to humans, and the defensive mechanisms plants use against insect predators. Children and adults alike will have the chance to touch real invertebrates, examine fossils, and learn about the brain’s inner workings.

Don’t miss the chance to visit the UW Biology Greenhouse, home to a diverse collection of plants, including the infamous “corpse plant,” known for its rare and pungent bloom.
