Wee! It’s the Year and Day of the Pig this Friday, and Pike Place Market is going hog wild with a live pig race you won’t want to miss. Other free festivities this week: birthday parties for Dr. Seuss, a community celebration for Jeffrey Gibson’s exhibition at SAM, and a Seattle Symphony Side-by-Side performance with Ballard High School. Have a fun week!

 

Monday, February 25

Toddler Gym Playtime Garfield CC has trikes, play houses, slides and more to get little ones moving, socializing and having fun. The tot gym is open every Mon. and Wed., 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Garfield Community Center, Seattle (Central District).

Black History Month Movie Night: The Wiz Dianna Ross and Michael Jackson star in this reimagined tale where Dorothy is a schoolteacher from Harlem who’s transported to the land of Oz. Pizza provided. 4 to 6 p.m. Renton Highlands Library.

Jeffrey Gibson: Like A Hammer Community Opening Celebration There will be music, performances and art-making at this neighborhood celebration for artist Jeffrey Gibson’s new exhibition, Like a Hammer. 5 to 9 p.m. Seattle Art Museum, Downtown Seattle.

Leap into Science Night Explore concepts of balance, mass, levers and fulcrums using your own bodies and simple materials. 5:30 to 7 p.m. Seattle Children’s Museum, Seattle (Lower Queen Anne).

 

Friday, March 1

Small Frye: Storytelling + Art Hear a story told by the folks at Seattle Children’s Theatre, then make story-related art. 10:30 to 11:45 a.m. Frye Art Museum, Seattle (First Hill).

Pig Day Out It’s National Pig Day and The Year of the Pig! Celebrate by watching a live pig race on the cobblestones at Pike Place Market. Also enjoy cultural performances, live music, a beer garden and a “s’winery.” 2 to 7 p.m. Pike Place Market, Seattle.

Seattle Symphony Side-by-Side Watch the Seattle Symphony perform with the Ballard High School Orchestra in this all-Scandinavian program. 7:30 p.m. Ballard High School Gym.

 

Saturday, March 2

Dr. Seuss Birthday Party Celebrate Read Across America Day and Dr. Seuss’ birthday with a celebration of stories, rhymes, songs and silliness. 11 a.m. to noon. Kent Library, Kent.

Seward Park Community Reforestation Make today a day of service by beautifying a local park. Wear boots and dress for the weather. 10 a.m. to noon. Seward Park, Seattle.  

Lunar New Year Celebration Watch traditional and contemporary cultural demonstrations including martial arts, music, dance and visual arts. 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. The Bellevue Collection, Bellevue.

Ranger Walk Take an interpretive tour of the Lake Hills Greenbelt and learn about local flora and fauna. 2 to 3 p.m. Lake Hills Greenbelt Ranger Station, Bellevue.
