Seattle's Child

Your guide to a kid-friendly city

Look! See…touch?

You’ve undoubtedly heard the phrase “a bull in a china shop.” That’s how I’ve felt in the past when taking my small children, stroller and diaper bag into a business with anything remotely breakable. I’m sure I’m not alone in this, which is why encouraging you to visit the Museum of Glass in Tacoma might seem like a practical joke. Breakable glass and small children? Good grief. Yet the museum’s current exhibit, Look! See? The Colors and Letters of Jen Elek and Jeremy Bert, not only encourages you to touch the glass, it suggests picking it up, moving it, even wearing it. The idea behind the exhibit is that we should actively engage in art as well as passively observe it. What a freeing concept! Grab the kids and head to Tacoma, where the novelty of saying “Yes, you can touch” might just be your best gift this holiday season.
