Honoree: Sonia Dye
Nominator: Margaret Loe
Sonia Dye works at Cottesmore Child Development Center, a non-profit child care facility that serves Teen Parents and low income families from Gig Harbor and the greater Key Peninsula area. Sonia is a caregiver in the infant room here at Henderson Bay High school. Cottesmore has been rebuilding the contract with the district for the past 16 years. Sonia has worked here all those years and is the person everyone trusts with their new babies.
She is the kind of person who is admired by kings and paupers alike. She is humble and yet very knowledgeable about infant brain development and early childhood practices. She is a quiet and gentle spirit often in the midst of fractured lives and dysfunctional families. She gives her time and energy without reservation or concern for her own needs. Her coworkers consider her the person who will listen to their concerns but never encourage their disloyalty.
Sonia is wise beyond her years. Sonia grew up in poverty in the islands off Portugal. She understands poverty. It is her ethics, passion for children and her intense loyalty that make her so different. I am proud to nominate her for the 2016 Unsung Hero Award.
