Strengthening Families Washington 2016 Unsung Hero Teal Victoria

Teal has a great social support system, and knows where to go to get help during times of need, but, as a single mother with a child who has needs 24/7, she often runs into difficulties getting the help she needs. This doesn’t stop her from being her daughter's advocate, nurse, teacher and most importantly, mother.

When I think about all of the parents I know who might actively use the Protective Factors in their life, I think of Teal. She has an understanding of child development (physically, emotionally, mentally) that surpasses many other parents I know. She has a constant understanding of her need to have resilience when stressful situations arise, and they have.

When Kaiyanna was a baby, Teal had difficulties getting the doctors to take her concerns for her child’s development seriously. Her mother’s instinct was correct, and because of her persistence, the doctors eventually discovered the reason for Kaiyanna’s halt in development. Kaiyanna was diagnosed with AT/RT cancer when she was just barely 1 year old. Teal works diligently to ensure her daughters needs are cared for. Teal has a great social support system, and knows where to go to get help during times of need, but, as a single mother with a child who has needs 24/7, she often runs into difficulties getting the help she needs. Although I haven’t known Teal for very long, I believe deep down that she is the ultimate image of an Unsung Hero and should be celebrated as such.
