The Seattle Center is known for hosting events that celebrate culture, art, and community. This summer, one of its most eye-catching events is returning for an encore.

On Sunday, June 21, Seattle families are invited to experience The Seattle Glow, a free hot air balloon spectacular beneath the Space Needle. After drawing more than 15,000 people to its inaugural event last summer, the glowing display is back — and even bigger.

This year, eight massive hot air balloons will illuminate the night sky at Fisher Pavilion. At dusk, the balloons will inflate and remain tethered to the ground while pilots fire their burners, causing the colorful envelopes to glow like giant lanterns against the backdrop of the Space Needle. The result is a mesmerizing display of light, heat, and color that’s unlike anything else in the city.

The event is designed to be more than just a photo opportunity. Families can spread out on the lawn, enjoy music from DJ Lucky Strike — music director for the Seattle Thunderbirds and backup music director for the Seattle Kraken — and make an evening of it. Food and beverages will be available at the Seattle Center Armory, and organizers encourage attendees to arrive early to settle in before the balloons begin to inflate.

Consider your child’s bedtime routine and decide whether a late summer night is worth the trade-off. It’s also an ideal outing for older kids, teens, and anyone hoping to capture a few unforgettable photos.

DJ music begins at 8 p.m., with balloon inflation and the glow taking place from 9 to 10 p.m. Organizers recommend arriving around 7:30 p.m. to grab dinner and secure a good viewing spot.
