Holiday carols glorify Christmases blanketed in snow. But in rain-drenched Seattle, that’s about as likely as a great-tasting fruitcake.
So the Poole family of Mercer Island has a tradition that brings some snowy cheer to their holiday. For the past couple of years, Lesley Poole has helped her kids Sam, 7, Duncan, 5, and Tatum, who turns 3 this month, make a flurry of snowflakes to hang in the window.
“The lack of snow made the idea of making snowflakes all that much more attractive,” Lesley said.
She remembers making snowflakes with her mother as a child and is glad to carry on the tradition. Sam, however, wasn’t satisfied with the basic flakes and sought his grandma’s help in crafting snowflakes that were a little more exotic.
They found a book, Snowflakes: Creative Paper Cutouts by Cindy Higham, and were excited to make more elaborate decorations following simple instructions.
“It feels more wintery when all we see is gray or dark skies this time of year,” Lesley said. “It just adds a little bit of brightness.”
