Congratulations unsung hero: Charlene Monuszko

Seattle’s Child recognizes the wonderful, everyday heroes nominated for the Washington Unsung Hero Awards this month.

February is Parent Recognition Month. Strengthening Families Washington, of the Department of Early Learning for Washington State, believes there is no better way to recognize a parent, grandparent, foster or adoptive parent than by acknowledging the numerous and impressive things they do to strengthen their family and those around them in their community.

Seattle’s Child is proud to sponsor the Washington Unsung Hero Awards, recognizing our everyday heroes and honoring the important role caregivers play in children’s lives. There are 28 nominees for the 28 days of February, and Seattle’s Child will highlight each and every one.

Congratulations to the Unsung Hero for February 26

Charlene Monuszko – Kent

Char works many hundreds of hours each year sewing costumes (for free, and also buys the materials) for the "Friendship Theatre" so that all of the special needs adults and children in the King County area can participate in a Broadway-like presentation. She works so hard to sew dozens of costumes each year and each and every one is a work of art. She also reaches out to many families, giving of her time and being a support for those not coping well with the stresses of caring for someone with special needs. Char never asks for anything in return and is one of the most giving people I have ever met. Her husband Gary also puts great time and effort into the community building sets and such, too – it was hard to nominate just one of them – but Char puts her entire life each day into helping people in so many ways; friendship, resources, money, food and just plain loving everyone she meets. Her home is called "The Gathering Place" and it is the place where everyone is welcome. She has even taken in families in the community into her home (special needs and others, too) to live while going through crisis. She does all this while caring for her special needs young adults, her elderly mother and other family members.
