Congratulations unsung heroes: Kasy and Tena Starkel

Seattle’s Child recognizes the wonderful, everyday heroes nominated for the Washington Unsung Hero Awards this month.

February is Parent Recognition Month. Strengthening Families Washington, of the Department of Early Learning for Washington State, believes there is no better way to recognize a parent, grandparent, foster or adoptive parent than by acknowledging the numerous and impressive things they do to strengthen their family and those around them in their community.

Seattle’s Child is proud to sponsor the Washington Unsung Hero Awards, recognizing our everyday heroes and honoring the important role caregivers play in children’s lives. There are 28 nominees for the 28 days of February, and Seattle’s Child will highlight each and every one.

Congratulations to the Unsung Hero for February 28

Kasy and Tena Starkel – Battle Ground

I nominate Kasy Starkel and his wife, Tena, as they have opened their home to many children in need of foster care; in that journey they have touched little lives in so many ways. Their loving hearts have accepted and held onto children who were in conditions that a child could not survive in. They have adopted a young boy they call their son and he has disabilities that will challenge them as a family, but they choose to love him and accept him just the way he is. They continue to accept children into their home through the fostering system. They recently accepted a child in the middle of the night, just a few days before Christmas. Kasy is a co-worker of mine and he came to work with a proud smile on his face and said, “He was delivered to us in the middle of the night.” Kasy shared a video of this child’s laughter and this tiny little laugh and giggle was the sound of happiness. I am not aware of the child’s conditions prior to his arrival to Kasy and Tena’s home, but the love and laughter that this child gets to experience in the Starkel home will be amazing. They bless little children with a happy place, a safe place and get to be a positive role model and environment to these children they accept into their home and care for.
