Become a bioscientist and learn about DNA, which is in all cellular organisms. Then use the same, everyday tools as molecular biologists to actually extract DNA from different organisms! 10th Annual Storytelling Festival Sat Jan 28 12:30 – 3 p.m. Vashon Theater. FREE
It’s the 10th year of this great community event put on by Vashon Wilderness Program. Come listen to magical, whimsical, and bizarre stories by local tellers, then enjoy fun 1-minute Story-thons, story improv games, some audience participation and more. Shepherd-boy Sam is tired of watching sheep. So, he decides to shake things up by pretending a wolf is near. Once the villagers realize he is just pretending, they, of course, stop listening. Sam has to learn that pulling the wool over everyone’s eyes, is perhaps not a good thing to do. What will happen when a wolf really does appear? Come and find out. Presented by StoryBook Theater. $15.
Garden Gnomes, Snug as a Bug Sun Jan 29 1-3 p.m. IslandWood, Bainbridge
This event is perfect for families with children who love to explore garden plants and critters. Although the IslandWood garden plants are snug in their beds during the winter months, there are always surprises including restless roots, bombastic bulbs, and even color…if you know where to look. Come visit with some of these sleepy-head plants, find out what the beetles and bees are up to – and then build mason bee houses or a bug hotel to take home to help native pollinators. $5. Pre-register. No dogs other than service animals.
