Westcrest Park – Forest Restoration Work Party Sat July 1, 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Westcrest Park
Join DIRT Corps in revitalizing the southwest portion of Westcrest Park. We’ll start with a brief weed ID education class and learn about the different types, why they are harmful and how to get rid of them. Then we’ll dive in and remove the invasive species. Later in the year, we’ll come back for some planting projects. Park at the South parking lot off SW Henderson St, next to the dog park. Meet at southeast side of the South parking lot, next to horse barn. Pre-register.
Tanabata Festival Sat July 1, 10 a.m.-3 p.m. Seattle Japanese Garden
Help celebrate the annual Japanese star festival of Tanabata by writing wishes. Visitors will have the opportunity to write their wishes and tie them to bamboo sticks in the garden. Be sure to stay for the presentation by a local Japanese sword group, and origami-folding lessons. Included with admission. $6, $4 seniors and ages 6 to 17, free ages 5 and younger.
Toddlers Tales & Trails Sat July 1, 10-11 a.m. Seward Park Audubon Ctr
Kids ages 2 to 5 and their caregivers can come on an adventure at Seward Park every Wednesday and Saturday. We’ll start the day with story time, songs, and fun activities inside, followed by outside exploration along the trails right outside our doors. Walks are easy and less than one mile in length. First come, first served – so don't be late. $2 per person.
Family Story Time at the Ballard Locks Sat July 1, 11 a.m. FREE
Bring your preschoolers and toddlers to the Ballard Locks for an outdoor story time this Saturday. Librarians will read stories, then play fun rhyme games and songs.
Red, White, and Zoo Animal Enrichment Sun July 2, 10 a.m.-2:30 p.m. Woodland Park Zoo
Orangutans, lemurs, and pigs, oh my! Come watch some animals relish patriotic-themed treats like watermelon, popsicles and corn on the cob in honor of the 4th. The complete feeding schedule can be found online. Event included with admission. $20.95, $12.95 ages 3 to 12, free ages 2 and younger.
Sharks Exhibit and Diving Sat July 1/Sun July 2, 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Point Defiance Zoo & Aquarium
Learn about a shark's role in the ocean ecosystem this summer, through fun, interactive activity stations If you're really brave, you can see sharks up close by doing a cage dive ($75, ages 8 and older, no experience required), or a scuba dive ($120, ages 15 and older, and scuba certification required). Dives ongoing throughout the summer. Event included with admission; $17.95, $16.95 seniors, $13.95 ages 5 to 12, $9.95 ages 3 to 4, free ages 2 and younger.
