Saturday morning cartoons, virtual reality, guitar making, and more this weekend!

 

Ready to Code: Build a Computer and Beat the Clock Sat Jan 27, 9:30-11:30 a.m. South Park Branch of Seattle Public Library. FREE

With a team, learners will build a computer out of pen and paper for memory cells, a grid of kitchen sponges for a screen, participants’ minds and bodies as processing units, and a simple programming language as their instructions. Each team will receive the same program to execute – in the form of stacks of printed code – with the goal of running the program correctly faster than the other teams.

Watercolor Moon Phase Poster Workshop Sat Jan 27, 11 a.m. & 1 p.m. University Bookstore U-District

Join artist Grace Rajendran for a fun, painting workshop and create a mini watercolor moon phase poster. Two sessions: ages 6 to 12 (11 a.m.) and 13 years and older (1 p.m.). $5. Pre-register by calling 206-634-3400. 

 

Maker Day Guitars Sat Jan 27, 12-3 p.m. MOHAI

Come to Maker Day and learn more about our city’s musical roots with TeachersWhoTech then make your own acoustic jazz guitar out of recycled materials. No musical experience required. Event included with admission. $19.95, $15.95 seniors, $13.95 military and students, free ages 14 and younger accompanying an adult chaperone (max. 5 youth per adult).

 

Once on This Island Sat Jan 27, 7:30 p.m. Studio East

Once On This Island tells the story of Ti Moune, a peasant girl who rescues and falls in love with Daniel, a wealthy boy from the other side of her island. After he is returned to his people, fantastical gods guide Ti Moune on a quest to test the strength of her love against the powerful forces of prejudice and hatred. In almost non-stop Caribbean song and dance, this show is not to be missed. Recommended for ages 6 and older. Fridays at 7:30 p.m. and Saturdays at 2:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. (No 2:30 p.m. show on January 27). Through February 10. $19, $17 seniors and ages 20 and younger.

 

Pop Up Virtual Reality Sun Jan 28, 6:30-9:30 p.m. Beacon Arts. FREE

Try out art immersion in digital painting and sculpturing thru Virtual Reality. Immersive Square will bring Popup Virtual Reality for everyone to enjoy. Just put on some VR goggles and unleash your imagination!
