Family-friendly events and freebies on Veterans Day, Nov. 11

Kids are out of school on Monday, Nov. 11, to observe Veterans Day. If you're lucky enough to be off that day, too, have a patriotic day at one of these local family-friendly spots:

At Seattle's Woodland Park Zoo, all active, retired and veteran U.S. military personnel (with ID) and their spouses can get in free on Monday. In addition, up to six accompanying family members will get a $4 discount. The zoo is open 9:30 a.m.-4 p.m. that day. (And just FYI: Those same veterans and spouses get a $4 discount year-round.)

Seattle's Museum of Flight (technically in Tukwila) will honor veterans beginning at noon with a concert, color guard, keynote speaker and more. Later that afternoon, two pilots will discuss air-combat rescue operations during the Vietnam War. Both veterans and active-duty military members get free admission that day. The Veterans Day celebration (musical performances and speakers) is from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Point Defiance Zoo & Aquarium in Tacoma will honor veterans Nov. 9-11 with free admission for current or retired military members and half-off for their immediate family members. Zoo hours are 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. (closed Tuesday and Wednesday).

Veterans Day Free Skate at Highland Arena in Shoreline is a great way to get active together with friends. All ages are welcome to skate for free, so bring your friends and family for some fun. Just pay for skate rentals. Come any time between 9:30 a.m. and 5:15 p.m.

Veterans Appreciation Days at Northwest Trek. From Saturday, Nov. 9 through Monday, Nov. 11, all veterans and active-duty military receive free admission, and their families pay half price at Northwest Trek. Enjoy the outdoors this weekend! Park hours are 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Mill Creek Veterans Day Parade. Honoring those who have served in U.S. Armed Forces, this parade is one of the biggest around town and features floats, bands, drill teams and more. Monday, Nov. 11 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Veterans Day Program in Shoreline. The City of Shoreline and the Shoreline Veterans Association celebrate today with a program and refreshments that honor veterans. All veterans are invited, along with family and friends. Monday, Nov. 11 from 2 to 4 p.m.
