First strawberries beckon

Strawberries are one of the most delectable early summer foods. It's the first of the berries to come into season, and local farms are gearing up for a bumper crop.

When can we expect ripe strawberries? Well, Biringer Farms is reporting that the strawberries are early this year, thanks to this lovely spring weather we're having. Biringer Farms opened for U-Pick in early June.

Now that the berries are ready to be plucked, round up your children for an afternoon at a U-Pick farm, taking in the sunshine and harvesting your own treats to munch. Find a list of farms, along with tasty recipes from local farmers (bring on the strawberry lemonade!), at the Puget Sound Fresh website: www.pugetsoundfresh.org.

As well, Strawberry Festivals are the place to be in June, with live entertainment, food, inflatables, face painting, strawberry shortcake eating contests and more. Check out the town of Marysville or Biringer Farms in Arlington June 21-22, or Bellevue's Crossroads Park June 28-29. Learn more by visiting Seattle's Child's online calendar.
