Friday Family Fun: Join the Great Washington Camp-In; here's how

Here's a fun idea for your Friday night: Go camping!

No, not at your favorite beach or state park, but in the privacy of your own living room or backyard (the weather should be decent enough to be outside.)

The Washington State Parks Foundation is hosting the Great Washington Camp-In beginning at 6:30 p.m. Friday (April 17), streaming live on YouTube.

Festivities will include park ranger talks and stories, acoustic guitar sing-alongs, adventure poetry and special campfire recipes.

Here's some of what's planned:

  • A greeting from Parks Commissioner Ken Bounds.
  • Stories and recipes from celebrity chef Kathy Casey.
  • Music by Johnny Bregar and the Brittany Collins Band.
  • Appalachian flatfooting by Charmaine Slaven (with instructions for joining in!) and poetry from Kamari Bright.
  • Special parks presentations about Whidbey Island’s Fort Casey Historical State Park and on the Northwest geology at Sun Lakes State Park in eastern Washington.
  • Other artists and surprise guests.

Campers will be invited to submit photos of their camping setup for a chance to win an REI gift certificate. In addition, the Washington State Parks Foundation will give out several complimentary Discover Passes, State Park guides and maps.

Happy camping!
