It’ll be high noon in the gun rights battle in Washington this fall. Two dueling ballot measures address background checks for gun sales. Federal law already requires buyers to pass a background check before they buy a gun from a licensed dealer. Initiative 594 calls for background checks on private sales, such as those at gun shows. Initiative 591 would prevent background checks from being applied without a uniform national standard. Federal background checks would still happen, but the state couldn’t come up with any variation on federal law. This measure also says the government can’t confiscate firearms without due process.
