The Seattle Center is known for its events that promote culture and art. This year, get yourself ready for one of the most magical evenings of the summer! On Sunday, June 22, Seattle families are invited to witness a spectacular display of color, light, and wonder at the Hot Air Balloon Glow at Seattle Center. Best of all? It’s completely free and open to all ages.

The Hot Air Balloon Glow at Seattle Center event is a rare opportunity to see six massive, 100-foot-tall balloons light up the night in the heart of the city. At dusk, the balloons will inflate on the International Fountain Lawn and glow like giant lanterns under the stars and the Space Needle. This mesmerizing show, known as a balloon glow, happens when tethered hot air balloons light their burners in sync, illuminating the night.

Consider your child’s bedtime routine and choose to spend a late night in Seattle.  This event is great for families with older kids and teens searching for a cool photo-op. Arrive early (starting at 7:30 p.m.) to grab dinner at the Seattle Center Armory Food & Event Hall, then find your spot on the lawn to watch the show unfold. Balloon inflation begins at 9:00 p.m., with the glow lighting up the sky from 9:10 to 10:10 p.m.

“This is bold, beautiful, and something that’s never been done in downtown Seattle,” said Joe Hammill, Seattle Center Event Booking & Contracts Manager.

Worried about transportation or where to park? The Seattle Center Monorail will run until 11 p.m., making it easier to get home after the glow fades. Too late to head home? Make it a summer staycation and head back to your hotel (with an amazing pool).

Know before you go:

  • Armory restrooms are open until 9:30 pm
  • Bring headphones for sensitive ears and dress for the nighttime weather
  • Bring blankets or comfy lawn chairs
  • The event is stroller-friendly
  • Seattle Monorail service extended until 11:00 pm
  • Balloon inflation and glow are subject to weather and wind conditions
