Northwest Folklife: How to enjoy the 2021 festival with kids (at home)

Four days, six channels, more than 120 streaming performances. Have fun!

Northwest Folklife 2021: Again this year, the Northwest Folklife Festival, a Seattle-area Memorial Day weekend tradition,  is coming to you!

The 50th anniversary event will take place  on the From Home to Home platform Friday through Monday (May 28-31, 2021).

The four-day event will feature more than 120 performances on six program channels, plus a Virtual Marketplace with dozens of local merchants.

Northwest Folklife: How it works

Livestreams: Performances on three platforms: Facebook, Twitch, and the Folklife site.

Participate: Folklife is not just for watching/listening! Here’s how to join in dances, games and workshops.

On demand: Some music, dance and hands-on art programming will be available on demand starting at 3 p.m. Friday. For instance, check out the Family Fun channel.

 

Northwest Folklife 2021: Don’t miss

A few things that jumped out from the schedule. (Full schedule here, by the way.)

Waterfront dance showcase: Halau Hula Pulamahiaikalikolehua, Ke Liko A`e O Lei Lehua E Kapuaokalani, Halau Hula O Napualani perform in a special showcase at 12:10 p.m. Sunday. Interestingly, this showcase was filmed at Pier 62 on the Seattle waterfront.

Hip hop artist Draze aka Dumi Maraire, performs on Saturday, May 29, at 4:30 p.m. More hip hop: 206 Zulu (6:05 p.m. Saturday) and Massive Monkees (4:30 p.m. Monday).

Clinton McFearon performs Monday afternoon.

Get up and dance! Participatory Balkan dancing with Kef (8:15 p.m. Sunday) and musical performance by Balkanarama (8:40 p.m. Saturday).

Circle of Indigenous Peoples Celebration: Stories, songs and traditions, 12:10 p.m. Saturday and 3:10 p.m. Monday. This event was filmed at the Duwamish Longhouse, Center for Wooden Boats and Seattle Center.

Reggae legend Clinton Fearon, 5:45 p.m. Monday, a show that was filmed at the Mural Amphitheatre at Seattle Center. Fearon talks about music and kids in this interview.

 

Northwest Folklife 2021: shopping

The festival’s Virtual Marketplace features more than 75 local small businesses. You’ll find both longtime favorite festival vendors and newcomers.

A commemorative pin is free with a purchase of $100 of more in festival merchandise.

It’s the festival’s 50th year, and there is special merch for that! The Merchandise Store will have a variety of apparel and more.
