Pick apples with City Fruit to donate to local food banks

September is Hunger Action Month, and you can put on your superhero hat to help combat food waste from unharvested city trees. Volunteers of all ages can join City Fruit on Saturday, Sept. 27 for a public pick-and-sort of fruit from 30 historic trees at the Amy Yee Tennis Center property.

City Fruit is a Seattle nonprofit working to harvest city fruit trees that might otherwise see their bounties go to waste. The harvested fruit will be donated to neighborhood food banks and homeless shelters. The date also happens to be National Public Lands Day, so your superhero hat will get an extra gold star.

City Fruit will have a cider press on hand, so that those harvested apples not good enough to donate don't go to waste either. Cider tastings will be free and jugs of cider can be taken home for a small donation; just bring your own container. The event runs from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. To sign up, visit www.cityfruit.org.
