Seattle school closure

Seattle closes schools for Friday (Nov. 12), citing a lack of staff

Four-day weekend: Schools already were to be closed Thursday for Veterans Day.

Update, Nov. 11: Bellevue School District also decided to close on Friday.

Seattle Public Schools students are getting a four-day weekend — but it wasn’t planned this way.

Schools already are to be closed Thursday (Nov. 11) to observe Veterans Day, but the district surprised parents by announcing on Tuesday that there also would be no school on Friday, Nov. 12.

The email from SPS, which went out during the noon hour, read as follows:

“Seattle Public Schools will be closed on Friday, November 12. We are aware of an unusually large number of SPS staff taking leave on Friday, and do not believe we have adequate personnel to open schools with the necessary environment for high-quality learning.

“This is a change from the published schedule, and we recognize the late notice creates challenging circumstances for many families.

“This learning day will be added to the end of the 21/22 school year to ensure all students have access to the full number of educational hours.”

In addition, there will be no classes for elementary students the week of Nov. 22-26. The district traditionally schedules parent/teacher conferences ahead of two days off for the Thanksgiving holiday.
