Northwest Folklife and Seattle Center are launching the first event in their new Our Big Neighborhood initiative this week: Movin’ Around the World. Our Big Neighborhood is a three-year youth and family initiative partnership between Northwest Folklife and Seattle Center, that expands on Northwest Folklife’s vision to bring people together to share folk, ethnic and traditional arts through participation and hands-on learning.
Seattle Center Armory will come alive with music and dance performances and workshops during the spring break for Seattle Public Schools, as it invites youth, caregivers and families to learn by singing, dancing, playing and connecting with cultural communities who share Our Big Neighborhood.
Each day of Movin’ Around the World features music and dance from a specific part of the world, with community leaders teaching and demonstrating the cultural art traditions.
Highly interactive, participants will be able to learn more about the world around them while getting active with lessons in Aztec dance lessons, traditional Mexican dancing, classical Indian dance, Chinese martial arts, and tap and hip-hop dance workshops. Workshops in dance and music are geared toward all ages, and arts, crafts and hands-on activities will be plentiful, as well.
The entertainment will happen daily for the week of April 7–13, from 11 am to 3 pm at the Seattle Center Armory.
