On a dark and stormy night, I ventured out with my teenage son and his friend into a world unknown. The mystical fog, eerie sounds, and pulsating lights enveloped our route as we traversed the tree-lined trail. Each step brought new spine-tingling sensations and anticipation for what would greet us – or spook us – around the next bend. This magically haunting experience was brought to us by Forest of Shadows: An Immersive Dark Tale. Part spooky nature walk through the Seattle Chinese Garden at South Seattle College, part psychological thriller, and thoroughly thrilling, Forest of Shadows is an exciting outing for older kids or teens.

What to expect
The sun had already set when we arrived at Forest of Shadows, and immersive light displays illuminated the dark trails. A clearly defined gravel path led us through the experience, and numerous staff members were stationed throughout the space to help guide us. Along the way, we encountered several displays that played off of familiar fears (don’t look up if you’re afraid of spiders!). In contrast, spooky sounds and ominous music played throughout the experience. There were a few spots with jump scares and moving parts on attractions, so stay alert to your surroundings. Even though the trail was dark, the light displays made for unique, Insta-worthy photo opportunities.

Not for the young’ns
My teenage companions thought the experience was exciting and would make for a fun group outing, but I was glad I hadn’t brought my younger (and more sensitive) daughter along. Forest of Shadows has a strict age requirement, and guests must be at least 10 years old to visit. Expect eerie music, spooky soundscapes, and a few jump scares. While not as intense as a haunted house, the psychological tension and dark setting make this best suited for kids ages 10+ who enjoy thrillers.

Before booking tickets for your children, consider both their sensitivity and stamina, as there is quite a bit of walking involved. The entire trail is approximately ¾ mile long, with several benches along the way for resting. It took us about an hour to walk through the experience one time with several breaks to stop and admire the displays. Guests are welcome to complete as many circuits of the trail as they would like during their visit. If you need to refuel, snacks and drinks (alcoholic and non-alcoholic) are available for purchase partway through the experience.

Limited time only
Seattle is one of two cities hosting the world premiere of this original experience — but hurry if you want to visit! Forest of Shadows will only be open for a limited one-month run before the same site transitions to the holiday wonderland of Astra Lumina in November.
